Tensions Escalate Between Ezinano And Umuzuocha Communities Over Land Dispute

In a troubling turn of events, the Ezinano and Umuzuocha communities in Awka South Local Government Area clashed on Saturday over a longstanding land dispute. Both communities have laid claims to the contested land, leading to heightened tensions and a standoff that required police intervention.

Hundreds of indigenes from the Ezinano community, including leaders, women, and youths, gathered on the disputed land to protest after hearing reports that members of the Umuzuocha community had commenced construction. However, their demonstration was met with force as heavily armed officers from the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) were deployed to disperse them on behalf of the Umuzuocha residents.

The situation escalated to a point where the Anambra State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam, had to step in to restore order. Members of the Ezinano community expressed their outrage and fear during interviews, revealing that they felt threatened by the police presence. Ezenwa Udoka, a member of the Ezinano community, stated, “We were confronted by police who threatened to shoot us on our own land. It took the intervention of the commissioner for us to be saved. What would have happened would have been genocide because they meant it when they said they would shoot us.”

Local farmer Gloria Chiama also criticized the police’s involvement, insisting that law enforcement should remain neutral in community land disputes and focus on maintaining order instead. She called on authorities to rein in the police, emphasizing their role in protecting citizens’ rights rather than exacerbating conflicts.

Adding to the complexities of the situation, elders and leaders from the Ezinano community revealed that they had previously filed a petition on September 11, 2024, directed to the Police Service Commission and other authorities. This petition addressed concerns regarding a senior police officer’s alleged interference in the land dispute.

In response to the unfolding situation, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) for the Anambra State command, encouraged Ezinano community leaders to formally present their grievances to the police. He remarked, “If they have any issue, they should come straight to the command. If they have any issue, they have the numbers of the Commissioner of Police and they have my own number; if they have any issue they can come to the command and lay their complaints.”

As tensions remain high, the need for a peaceful resolution to the land dispute becomes increasingly urgent, highlighting the ongoing struggles over land ownership and the role of law enforcement in community affairs. The Anambra State government and relevant authorities will need to intervene to address the root causes of the conflict and ensure the safety and rights of all residents involved.
