Tensions Rise in Benue as Lawmaker Links Killings to Governor’s Silence on Anti-Grazing Law
The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, has blamed the Benue State Government for the recent wave of killings across the state.
In an interview with Punch, Agbese pointed fingers at Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing him of neglecting the state’s anti-open grazing law, which he claims has directly contributed to the surge in violent attacks and the deaths of innocent citizens.
He emphasized the resolve of the House to confront insecurity nationwide, particularly the recurring loss of lives and destruction of property.
“As we resume tomorrow (Tuesday), we are determined to confront the issue of insecurity across the country head-on. We are tired of constantly observing one-minute silences for the dead. As Speaker Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas always says, every Nigerian life matters to the 10th National Assembly,” Agbese stated.
He further alleged that prior to Alia’s administration, the anti-open grazing law helped regulate the activities of herders in the state. However, the governor allegedly abandoned the law, insisting instead on upholding the ECOWAS Protocol on free movement.
“While the ECOWAS Protocol promotes free movement of people and goods in West Africa, it does not support undocumented or reckless human transit,” Agbese said. “Previously, when herders arrived at new settlements, they were expected to identify themselves to local communities. That structure broke down under Governor Alia, who dismissed the threats and insisted there were no problems in Benue.”
“We’re glad he is beginning to realize that such an approach is unsustainable,” he added.
Agbese also urged Governor Alia and Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to comply with the summons issued by the House Committee on Public Petitions, chaired by Mike Etaba.
When asked about the consequences of a possible failure to appear, Agbese responded, “Let’s not jump ahead. Thursday isn’t today, and I remain hopeful they will honour the invitation. There’s no reason to believe otherwise.”
