The incident occurred during a Christmas event at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, which led to the death of at least 35 children. The event was organized by Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, the former wife of the Ooni of Ife, in December 2024. Following the tragedy, Prophetess Silekunola and two others were arrested and taken to court.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Oba Aderounmu expressed deep sorrow for the incident and emphasized the need for both spiritual and material assistance for the grieving families.

The statement read: “It is with great sadness that we extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their children in this devastating stampede. This tragedy is beyond comprehension, and our hearts go out to the families who will forever be affected.”

The monarch also expressed solidarity with Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, broadcaster Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and the Principal of Islamic High School, Mr. Fasasi, acknowledging their efforts in addressing the aftermath of the disaster with compassion and urgency.

Oba Aderounmu called on the community to unite in support for the victims’ families and to offer both prayers and tangible aid during this difficult time.
