The Unheard Voice Of A Lagos Cab Driver: When Beauty, Betrayal, And Money Collide

On a recent ride in Lagos, I had a candid conversation with a cab driver, who shared some unsettling stories that left me deeply reflecting on the realities of modern life. One striking story was about a young woman he rushed to the hospital, writhing in pain from complications

related to a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) procedure she had undergone.

She revealed, tearfully, that the surgery had cost her a whopping five million naira and admitted that her decision stemmed from the belief that living in a place like Lekki meant you needed to invest in yourself to attract wealthy men. She had no job or business to sustain such an expense. As she recounted her painful ordeal, she vowed to warn others against following the same path—an experience that taught her more than any warning could.

It’s disheartening to witness young women in their 20s and 30s risking their health for beauty at a time when their bodies are naturally youthful. What happens when age and multiple pregnancies eventually alter these artificially enhanced bodies? Will more surgeries follow?

Sadly, I know of two families who lost young women to such procedures—one below the age of 25 and another a young mother in her early 30s, leaving behind three children under the age of 10. It’s a stark reminder of the risks we take for beauty’s sake.

The driver also voiced concerns over the increasing rate of infidelity he’s observed among married women in Lagos. According to him, the “sleeping around” is at an all-time high, especially among women whose husbands live abroad. He mentioned that his job had made him skeptical of finding a wife in Lagos, as the dating culture seemed rife with dishonesty.

In a world where relationships are often defined by financial gain, it’s refreshing to hear from those who prioritize true connection. A popular social media personality recently declared that infidelity among married couples has become a “pandemic,” with both partners turning a blind eye as long as the bills are paid.

Ultimately, the driver expressed a deep concern: finding a wife who values him for more than his ability to financially provide. He revealed that many women dismiss him simply because he’s a cab driver, without bothering to learn about his work ethic or daily earnings. Despite his humble beginnings—having moved back from an Asian country—he is determined to build something substantial, and he expects women to recognize the value of a man who asks for nothing but a real connection.

This candid conversation with the cab driver reveals a growing disconnect between modern expectations and the values that could make relationships truly fulfilling.
