In their statement, the Obamas reflected on America’s political shifts, attributing the Republican Party’s sweeping success in national and state elections to the nation’s current socio-economic climate.

“America has endured significant challenges over the past few years,” they wrote. “In a diverse nation like ours, disagreement is inevitable. But progress requires us to approach one another with grace and respect – even amid strong differences.”
