Tinubu Celebrates Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole at 85, Commends His Legacy in Journalism and Diplomacy

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to veteran journalist, diplomat, and elder statesman, Ambassador Patrick Dele Cole, on the occasion of his 85th birthday, according to The Nation Newspaper.

In a congratulatory message conveyed through the State House in Abuja on Monday, President Tinubu hailed Ambassador Cole as a towering figure in Nigeria’s public life whose contributions to journalism, diplomacy, and national development remain deeply impactful.

“On behalf of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and myself, I congratulate you on your remarkable 85th birthday on August 4,” President Tinubu stated.

Reflecting on Cole’s distinguished career, the President highlighted his pivotal role in reshaping Nigeria’s media landscape, particularly through his leadership at the Daily Times in 1976, where he served as Managing Director. Tinubu praised Cole for transforming the newspaper into one of Africa’s most influential publications, promoting journalistic excellence and elevating public discourse.

The President also acknowledged Ambassador Cole’s service in the diplomatic corps, citing his roles as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Argentina and Brazil, and as Special Adviser on International Relations.

“You have demonstrated the highest ideals of professionalism, leadership, and moral courage,” Tinubu added. “I salute and recognise you on this occasion of your 85th birthday and always as a patriot, intellectual giant, diplomat, doyen of journalism, and elder statesman.”

The President concluded his message with warm wishes for Cole’s continued health and vitality, stating: “Happy birthday with 85 memorable cheers!”
