Tinubu Gives Approval For Nigeria To Host 2026 CAF Congress And CAF Awards
According to Ireporter Online, President Bola Tinubu has approved Nigeria’s bid to host the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) as well as the 2026 CAF Awards ceremony, marking a significant milestone for the country’s role in continental football administration.
The CAF Congress, scheduled for October, is expected to bring together key stakeholders in African football, including presidents of all 54 CAF member associations, representatives of the six zonal unions, and top football administrators across the continent.
The approval was confirmed during the ongoing Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, following a high-level meeting between President Tinubu and CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe. In attendance were Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu; President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau; Special Adviser to the CAF President, Amaju Melvin Pinnick; and CAF Acting General Secretary, Samson Adamu.
The development is being viewed as a major diplomatic and sporting win for Nigeria, further strengthening its influence in African football governance. The CAF Ordinary General Assembly remains the highest decision-making body of the organisation, where policies, reforms, and strategic development plans for African football are deliberated and adopted.
In addition, Nigeria will also host the CAF Awards, one of the continent’s most prestigious football ceremonies, which honours outstanding players, coaches, and teams across Africa for their performances and achievements.
