In an interview with Vanguard, Okupe responded to criticisms regarding Tinubu’s “Emilokan” declaration, which some felt reflected a lack of preparedness, especially given the worsening economy since his assumption of office. Okupe acknowledged the difficult timing of Tinubu’s presidency, saying, “Unfortunately, he has come into government at a very tough time.”

Recalling his conversation with Tinubu, Okupe said he had questioned the decision to succeed an administration marked by neglect and regression. Tinubu’s reply, according to Okupe, was that he was driven by a deep passion to help Nigeria.

Okupe further defended Tinubu, emphasizing that the president should not be blamed for the systemic issues or failures of the previous administration. “How can you hold Tinubu accountable for the problems of the past 30 or 40 years, or the last eight years of national neglect? It’s unfair and unrealistic,” he argued.

On Tinubu’s reform agenda, Okupe stressed that significant progress would take time. “As a reformer, Bola Tinubu will need at least two years to establish his policies and see real results,” he said. Comparing Tinubu’s leadership style to that of Singapore’s former leader Lee Kuan Yew, Okupe highlighted the importance of long-term vision in transforming a nation, pointing out that Lee spent 31 years turning Singapore from a Third World to a First World country.
