Tinubu’s Lawyer Gives Reason For Opposing US Court’s Verdict Over Release Of Academic Records
President Bola Tinubu’s lawyer has contested the decision made by the United States District Court in the Northern District of Illinois regarding the release of his academic records.
On Sunday, the Court ruled in favor of the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, and directed the Chicago State University to provide President Tinubu’s academic records by today (Monday).
Magistrate Jeffrey Gilbert instructed Tinubu’s alma mater to furnish all pertinent and non-privileged documents to Atiku’s legal team within a two-day window.

Among the documents sought by the PDP candidate, through his attorney Angela Liu, are Tinubu’s admission and acceptance records at the Chicago State University, his dates of attendance, as well as the degrees, awards, and honors he received from CSU.
As the deadline set by the magistrate approached, Tinubu’s lawyers petitioned the US high court, contending that the magistrate’s initial ruling should be reviewed by a district judge.
Subsequent to the Court’s decision, Tinubu, through his New York-based lawyer Oluwole Afolabi, articulated the grounds for opposing the verdict.
Firstly, he argued that his academic records, in question, are not pertinent in Nigerian courts as asserted by Atiku, citing that “the Nigerian election proceedings and the Nigerian courts have explicitly been unreceptive to the discovery.”
Secondly, Tinubu contended that Atiku’s request “is unduly intrusive because it allows the applicant (Atiku) to conduct a fishing expedition into the intervenor’s private, confidential, and protected educational records.”
