Richard Idowu had returned to his hometown to partake in the jubilation marking the traditional ruler’s milestone. After a meeting following the coronation event, local hunters, exuberant in celebration, fired shots into the air. Unfortunately, one hunter aimed downward, unintentionally striking the PDP chieftain in the leg.

Despite immediate efforts to rush him to the hospital, Idowu succumbed to his injuries, leaving a community in shock and grief. A security operative attached to the deceased retaliated by shooting the hunter on the spot.

Confirming the incident, Afeez Lawal, a special assistant to the deceased, revealed that Idowu bled profusely and did not receive timely medical attention. The tragic incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at the Baptist Hospital in Ejigbo.

The suspect, detained at the Divisional Police Headquarters in Ejigbo, has been transferred to the state Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo for further investigation by the Prompt Response Unit.

As the community grapples with the loss, the state government has called for calm, assuring the public that a thorough investigation is underway. Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, conveyed Governor Ademola Adeleke’s condolences and emphasized that justice would prevail in the investigation.
