Travel Turmoil: Nigerians Demand Relief Amid Fare Surge

bus stations and airports are bustling with activity. Travelers are making their way home, but they are faced with the burden of exorbitant fares.
Airports are increasingly crowded as families, including those returning from abroad, scramble to secure flights to their respective states.
Investigations by Vanguard reveal that domestic flights for the holiday season are fully booked, leaving most travelers with no choice but to travel by road, where they grapple with high fares and growing concerns about highway insecurity.
High Fares on the Road
Bus transport companies have dramatically raised their fares. A visit to bus stations in Lagos, such as Yaba, Orile, Oshodi, and Maza-Maza, revealed that prices for journeys to the eastern regions have surged significantly. Luxury buses, often considered the best option despite their dilapidated appearances, are charging steeply, with mini-buses—like Toyota Sienna and Hiace—almost doubling their previous fares.
For instance, luxury buses that previously charged N23,000 have increased their rates to between N33,000 and N40,000 per passenger. Notably, major transport companies like Chisco and The Young Shall Grow are charging N40,000 as of December 22, 2024. Many of these buses operate primarily at night, adding to the travelers’ apprehension given the country’s security issues.
Mini-bus operators, who charged N33,000 just a week prior, are now demanding between N52,000 and N55,000 and are reluctant to accept advance bookings, anticipating further fare increases.
Passengers, eager for a holiday season reunion with family, express willingness to endure high costs to return to their roots. One mother traveling with her three children to the east stated, “We see this as a sacrifice for our kids to visit their state of origin for the first time.”
Due to the soaring transportation costs, travelers are urging the federal government to reinstate the 50% fare reduction on interstate luxury bus routes, which was provided during the same period last year.
Transport Companies’ Justification
Transport operators attribute the price hikes to the minimal passenger numbers for return trips to Lagos and the inflated costs of diesel coupled with high maintenance expenses. One operator remarked, “With empty buses returning, we can’t afford to operate at a loss. Fuel prices and vehicle wear and tear necessitate these fare increases.”
Despite the government’s announcement of a 50% fare reduction for the holiday period, many transporters have yet to implement it. They claim they are waiting for necessary support funds from the government.
Air Travel Challenges
Air travel fares are also suffering from significant inflation, as observed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos. For example, Air Peace is charging between N200,100 and N285,800 for a one-way economy ticket from Abuja to Anambra, with no seats available for popular routes.
Passengers lament the pain of high transportation fees, noting the festive season often brings opportunities for family reunions despite the financial strain.
Auto Technicians Benefit
In contrast, auto technicians are reaping the benefits of the season as many travelers prefer to prepare their personal vehicles for the road in order to avoid commercial transportation costs.
Overall, the festive travel landscape is marked by soaring fares, disappointment at the absence of government assistance, and ongoing concerns about safety and security on the roads and in the air.
