Osifo expressed skepticism regarding the government’s announcement of a new minimum wage on May 1, citing ongoing negotiations with the Tripartite Committee. While the TUC is pushing for ₦615,000, Osifo acknowledged that the government might not immediately agree to this figure, suggesting that negotiations will determine the final amount.
The TUC’s revised demand reflects economic considerations, with Osifo highlighting the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on wage calculations. Despite the substantial increase, Osifo remains hopeful that negotiations will continue after May 1.
The federal government established a 37-member tripartite committee to discuss and negotiate a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers, indicating a commitment to addressing labour concerns. However, the final decision on the minimum wage is subject to negotiation between the government and organized labour.
