TUC Stands Apart: Withdraws From NLC Planned Protest
In a surprising twist, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) has announced its decision not to partake in the upcoming nationwide protest declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC)…..READ ALSO Breaking The Silence: Federal Government’s Response To NLC, TUC
Vice President of the TUC, Tommy Etim, revealed this development on Wednesday, highlighting the union’s discontent over the lack of consultation by the NLC prior to the protest announcement.
According to Etim, the NLC’s decision to unilaterally declare the protest without involving the TUC in the decision-making process goes against the principles of collective action and mutual agreement.
He emphasized that both the NLC and the TUC had issued a joint statement, presenting a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government concerning various pressing issues including the rising cost of living, inflation, and insecurity.
With the ultimatum set to expire on February 22nd, Etim stressed that it was expected for both unions to collaboratively assess the situation and determine the best course of action. However, the NLC’s independent announcement of the protest caught the TUC off guard and led to their decision to abstain.
Etim articulated, “Our respective NEC is made up of highly intelligent individuals who are desirous that we both work together always in our collective interest. Even if we didn’t anticipate our NEC decision meetings, it is our responsibility as leaders to harmonize our positions before jointly going to the press.”
The TUC’s withdrawal from the planned protest underscores the importance of consultation and consensus-building in labor movements, signaling a rift in the unity of purpose between the two major trade unions. As the nation grapples with socio-economic challenges, the divergent paths taken by the NLC and the TUC highlight the complexities of collective action in advocating for workers’ rights and interests.
