Minimum Wage Negotiations: No New Offer Yet, Says TUC-President Osifo (Details)
Members of the tripartite committee, comprising the federal government and labour unions, resumed discussions on a new minimum wage for Nigerian workers in Abuja on Wednesday.
Following the meeting, Trade Union Congress (TUC) President Festus Osifo informed the press that the federal government had not presented a new minimum wage offer. “Nothing has been presented yet. The minister of finance said they are still working on the template that the president mandated them to work on,” Osifo said.
He noted that the discussions focused on the underlying principles but did not advance beyond previous presentations. Osifo expressed hope that the next meeting would yield concrete results.
The federal government was represented by Finance Minister Wale Edun, Budget and National Planning Minister Atiku Bagudu, and Labour Minister Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, along with representatives from the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Head of Service of the Federation. Organised labour representatives included Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero and TUC President Osifo. Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Director-General Abdulateef Shittu also attended.
The talks follow a recent indefinite strike by organised labour over the federal government’s failure to meet their new minimum wage demands of N615,500 and N494,000, which the government deemed unrealistic. The strike was temporarily suspended for one week to facilitate negotiations.
