U.S. Unleashes Massive Tariff Wave — Nigeria Among 60 Nations Targeted

According to Ireporter Online, United States President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping reciprocal tariff programme targeting 60 countries, including Nigeria, in a move designed to balance trade duties between the U.S. and its partners.

Figures released by the White House show Nigeria will now face a 15% tariff under the new policy. The programme sets a baseline 10% tariff on all imports into the United States, with higher rates applied to specific countries and products.

China is subject to a 30% tariff, with extra duties on certain goods, while Brazil faces 50%, though reduced rates apply to industries such as aircraft, energy, and orange juice. Canada will see a 10% levy on energy products and 35% on items not covered by the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement. India is listed at 25%, with an additional 25% threatened to take effect later this month.

The tariff list also includes several African, Asian, European, and Latin American nations, with rates ranging from 10% to over 40%. Countries like Laos and Myanmar face some of the steepest increases, at 40%, while Syria tops the list with 41%.

According to U.S. officials, the agreement underpinning this programme—initially set to expire on August 12—has been extended for another 90 days through an executive order. The White House maintains that the policy aims to promote fairness and protect American industries from what it calls “imbalanced trade relationships.”
