Umahi Reveals Contractors That Won’t Get Jobs
Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, maintains a resolute stance that no road contract will be awarded under his supervision unless the project adopts a concrete layout.
Umahi conveyed this during an inspection tour of the Oshodi Oworoshoki-Ojota Road in Lagos on Tuesday.
Satisfaction with the progress of the work was expressed by the Minister, who indicated that the project was nearly completed, with just a few finishing touches remaining, as stated in a press release by the ministry’s spokesperson, Blessing Lere-Adams.

He questioned the reluctance of certain contractors to adopt the more durable and cost-effective Concrete Technology for road construction, given its advantages over bitumen, which is both more expensive and less durable. He attributed this hesitancy to the declining quality of recent bitumen products.
Umahi highlighted the exceptional condition of the road despite the heavy truck traffic it endures, emphasizing that had it been an asphalt road, signs of deterioration would have already emerged. He invited contractors who are skeptical about concrete roads to visit the Oworoshoki Road as an example of its superiority over asphalt.
In addition to inspecting the Oshodi Oworoshoki-Ojota Road, Umahi visited the Apongbon Bridge in Lagos, which suffered a fire earlier in the year. He expressed optimism that the Federal Government would restore the facility and install solar lighting in the vicinity.
During his visit to the Iponri section of the Eko Bridge, Umahi urged the Lagos State Government to encourage individuals using the area underneath the bridge to maintain its cleanliness, transforming it into an attractive and inhabitable space.
Furthermore, while at the Porto-Novo Liverpool roundabout bridge, the Minister instructed the Director of Design and Bridges, Engineer Adesanya Awosanya, to submit a report on structural defects affecting this and other similar bridges to his office.
