Unlocking Agricultural Potential: Embracing GMO For Sustainable Farming In Nigeria
Sylvester Oikeh, the TELA/BMSS project manager at the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF), has urged activists to shift their focus from demonising genetically modified organisms (GMO) and instead embrace the technology…Unlocking Agricultural Potential: Embracing GMO For Sustainable Farming In Nigeria
for its potential to boost agricultural productivity in Nigeria.
In a recent interview, Mr. Oikeh emphasized that GMO products are safe and here to stay, noting that the technology has undergone rigorous biosafety regulatory approval processes to ensure safety. He highlighted that the introduction of genetically engineered crops like TELA maize offers promising benefits, including enhanced drought tolerance and insect protection.
“The primary challenge is not the safety of GMO products but the increased anti-GMO activism that hampers African farmers from reaping the full benefits of these technologies,” he said. “We need to collaborate with agencies like the National Biotechnology Research and Development Agency and the National Biosafety Management Agency to maximize the potential of these innovations for farmers.”
Mr. Oikeh also shared positive feedback from farmers who are enthusiastic about the technology, with many expressing satisfaction with the new products that are now available for maize production.
He stressed the importance of a seed system that ensures the highest quality of GMO products at affordable prices, with the involvement of seed companies to meet this demand.
Additionally, he pointed out that GM maize is comparable to conventional maize in most agronomic characteristics, with added benefits like drought resistance and reduced pesticide use. This contributes to a more sustainable farming practice.
Highlighting the regulatory conditions that accompany every GMO release, Mr. Oikeh noted that safety monitoring, environmental impact assessments, and stringent reporting requirements ensure the safe adoption of these technologies.
“As we work to integrate these innovations into the agricultural sector, we must continue fostering dialogue and cooperation to overcome barriers and ensure a sustainable future for Nigerian agriculture,” he concluded.
