Unmasking The Northern Agenda: A New Political Chess Game

Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and former governor of Kano state, has strongly criticized some self-appointed “Northern leaders” for meddling in the process of candidate selection, particularly for the presidential race…Unmasking The Northern Agenda: A New Political Chess Game

He argued that these individuals do not have the authority to claim they represent the entire region.

Kwankwaso, speaking in an interview with BBC Hausa, expressed his dissatisfaction with the interference, which he believes is dividing the community and undermining democracy. He emphasized that the people should be allowed to decide who they want as president without any undue influence from these so-called leaders.

He remarked, “What they are doing is creating division. We must act based on the truth. Leaders in the North and West should not favor any candidate. They must not spread lies about who the North has ‘chosen’—such claims are being made by just a few individuals.”

The former governor also recalled the 2019 elections when multiple candidates emerged from the Northwest, yet were disregarded in favor of others. He lamented, “Despite the presence of experienced leaders, the results were manipulated to favor specific candidates.”

Addressing rumors about a supposed agreement between himself, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP, and Peter Obi of the LP, Kwankwaso vehemently denied any such pact. He revealed that he had heard reports of meetings where an alleged arrangement for the presidency was discussed, but he assured the public that no such deal had been made.

“These rumors are damaging. It is said that I agreed to a rotation system where Atiku would serve for four years, I would take the next four, and Peter Obi would serve eight years. This is a complete fabrication,” he concluded.

Kwankwaso’s statement comes amid ongoing discussions about the 2027 elections and the influence of Northern political figures.
