“Van Dijk Slams Rooney’s ‘Lazy’ Criticism After Liverpool’s Triumphant Comeback”

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has fired back at Wayne Rooney’s recent comments questioning his leadership, calling the criticism “lazy” following the Reds’ crucial Premier League win over Aston Villa that ended their four-match losing streak.

According to Ireporter Online, Van Dijk dismissed the Manchester United legend’s claim that Liverpool’s struggles were down to a lack of leadership from him and Mohamed Salah, insisting that such remarks overlook the collective effort within the squad.

Speaking after the 2-0 victory at Anfield, the Dutch defender said he had no hard feelings toward Rooney but felt the comments were misplaced. “I didn’t hear him last year,” Van Dijk said. “It doesn’t hurt me. Obviously, he’s a legend and inspired many, but that comment is a bit of lazy criticism. It’s easy to blame others, but he knows we’re all trying to help each other. Last year, when things went well, you didn’t hear that. It is what it is—pundits have their job, and we just have to deal with it.”

Rooney, in response on his podcast, stood by his remarks, maintaining that his assessment was purely professional. “I’ve got full respect for Virgil. He’s a fantastic player,” he said. “But as a pundit, I have to give my honest opinion. I don’t think he’s been at his best compared to previous seasons, and that’s what I pointed out.”

Liverpool began the campaign strongly under new manager Arne Slot, winning their opening five league games. However, a string of poor results saw them slip behind in the title race before their recent recovery against Villa, which lifted them to third place—seven points adrift of leaders Arsenal.

Van Dijk also addressed reports suggesting that Slot’s job could be under threat, insisting the players remain firmly behind their manager. “I’ve heard the talk about pressure on him, but this club doesn’t make rash decisions,” the captain stated. “We knew we could work our way out of this. It’s not easy, but we believe in ourselves, stay humble, and keep working together. That’s the only way forward.”
