The Kannywood film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of veteran actor Malam Nata’ala, popularly known as Mata Na Mato, a native of Potiskum in Yobe State.

According to Ireporter Online, the celebrated actor passed away after a prolonged battle with illness. Nata’ala, widely recognized for his role as an almajiri-school teacher in the popular Arewa24 drama series Dadin Kowa, had earlier made a public appeal for financial assistance to cover his medical expenses.

In August 2025, the actor revealed that he had been diagnosed with cancer, sharing that his treatment required injections costing about ₦250,000 every three weeks, excluding other hospital-related expenses. He had sought the support and prayers of fans and well-wishers, expressing hope for recovery.

His plight attracted significant attention across social media and beyond, prompting a wave of sympathy. Notably, Niger Republic’s President, Abdourahamane Tchiani, reportedly donated ₦27 million to aid his medical treatment — a gesture that drew widespread commendation.

Malam Nata’ala, whose real name was Mata Yakubu, rose to prominence for his portrayal of humble community figures and educators, earning him deep affection from fans and colleagues alike. His performances resonated with audiences across Northern Nigeria, making him a respected figure in the Hausa entertainment industry.
