WAEC Breaks Silence! 2025 WASSCE Results Flawed, 4 Subjects Under Review

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially admitted to errors in the recently released results of the May/June 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) and has begun reviewing four core subjects—Mathematics, English Language, Biology, and Economics—according to iReporter Online.

The council made this known in a statement signed by its Acting Public Affairs Officer, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, on Thursday, August 7, 2025.

The announcement comes just days after WAEC released the results for over 1.9 million candidates across 23,554 secondary schools, with only 38.32% obtaining credit passes in five subjects, including English and Mathematics—a significant drop from the 72.12% success rate recorded in 2024, according to iReporter Online.

The unexpected decline in performance led to a nationwide outcry. Several stakeholders demanded the cancellation of the results altogether, while a federal lawmaker called for the immediate release of the results of 192,089 candidates withheld due to alleged examination malpractice.

WAEC attributed the problem to technical issues arising from a new innovation known as paper serialisation, aimed at curbing malpractice.

The method, also used by other national examination bodies, was implemented in the four affected subjects. However, a post-release review identified bugs in the system that distorted some of the results.

In the statement, WAEC expressed deep regret and apologized to affected candidates and the general public. The council also confirmed that access to the 2025 WASSCE results has been temporarily restricted on the result-checker portal to allow for corrections.

According to iReporter Online, WAEC reassured candidates that all issues will be addressed within 24 hours, urging them to re-check their results after the review window.

“We remain committed to excellence, fairness, and transparency,” the council stated, pledging to restore public confidence in its operations.

As it stands, the results of 192,089 candidates, representing 9.75% of the total, remain withheld pending investigations into exam malpractice—though that figure marks a slight improvement from 2024’s 11.92%, according to iReporter Online.
