Wedding Cancelled After Bride Refuses To Call 11-Year-Old “Aunty”

A wedding ceremony has reportedly been cancelled following a heated disagreement between a bride and her prospective mother-in-law over the manner in which the bride should address younger family members.

The bride, identified as Adefemi Taiwo Damilola, revealed that the marriage was called off after she refused to address her fiancé’s younger relatives with the traditional titles of “Aunty” and “Uncle.”

Damilola explained that the clash began when she asked her fiancé’s 11-year-old niece, Temilade, to assist with zipping her dress. According to her, her mother-in-law reprimanded her for calling the child by name rather than addressing her as “Aunty Temilade.” She was further told that the young girl should be regarded as her “small mother-in-law” and therefore must be respected with the title.

The situation worsened when Damilola also addressed another niece, aged 15, by name in Yoruba. Her mother-in-law considered this disrespectful and insisted that all younger relatives must be referred to as “Aunty” or “Uncle.”

Despite efforts to resolve the matter, Damilola refused to comply. She recounted how her fiancé sided with his mother, urging her to use the honorific titles, but she stood her ground, saying it was humiliating to call children much younger than her “Aunty.”

“This is 2025. I am 29 years old with a master’s degree and I run a successful business. I cannot be compelled to call someone who is 11 years old, preparing for common entrance exams, ‘Aunty.’ That hurts my pride,” she said.

According to her, the mother-in-law subsequently informed the family head that the marriage was cancelled. The fiancé reportedly blocked Damilola on all social media platforms shortly afterward.

Reflecting on the incident, Damilola maintained that she would rather walk away than submit to what she described as “unreasonable demands.” She concluded by saying she is now single and intends to heal and move on with her life.
