“‘We’re Breeding Champions!’ – AFN Chief Okowa Says Nigeria’s Athletics Future Is Unstoppable”

The President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa, has confidently declared that the future of Nigerian athletics is exceptionally bright.

Speaking on Friday at the AFN National Trials held at the Yabatech Sports Complex in Lagos, Okowa expressed optimism after witnessing a series of outstanding performances by young Nigerian athletes on the very first day of the competition.

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, he described the display as “a clear testament to the incredible potential and depth of talent in the country’s track and field landscape.”

“What we are witnessing here is nothing short of inspiring,” Okowa stated. “These athletes are the future, and the AFN is committed to harnessing their potential through proper structure, support, and long-term planning.”

He stressed that the Federation would continue to invest in building a sustainable athletic system that nurtures talent from the grassroots to the elite level. “With unity, commitment, and the right investment, Nigeria will reclaim its rightful place as a global athletics powerhouse,” he added.

The trials produced electrifying moments on Day One, including impressive showings in the Men’s Shot Put, Long Jump, and the Women’s Hammer Throw.

In the Women’s Hammer Throw, Olatoye Oyesade clinched the top position with a massive throw of 67.50 meters, outclassing Quadri Rashidat Motunrayo who registered a season-best of 46.72 meters.

Ugochukwu Dickson Nnagozie and Edo-born Audu Shakamomodu secured qualifying marks for Tokyo in the Men’s Shot Put with throws of 16.23m and 15.62m, respectively.

Meanwhile, in the Men’s Long Jump, Godfred Charles Edward soared to 7.95m (+1.6), followed by Daramola Ibukun with 7.56m (+1.8).

ACCORDING TO IREPORTER ONLINE, Day Two of the trials promises even more excitement with events like the Long Jump, High Jump, 100m sprint, 3000m steeplechase, 400m hurdles, and Javelin all on schedule.
