What Transpired When Arewa Youths Storm NNPCL Headquarters To Demand Cancellation Of Tompolo’s Pipeline Surveillance Contract
Members of the Northern Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative and the Arewa Youth Forum staged a protest on Monday at the headquarters of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) in Abuja.
They were demanding the cancellation of the Pipeline Surveillance Contract awarded to Tantita Security, owned by the government of Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo.
Despite the presence of security operatives deployed to guard the facility, the protesters carried placards and called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to exercise caution in renewing the contract due to alleged financial malfeasance associated with it.
Some of the placard inscriptions read: “Tompolo’s Pipeline Surveillance is a Fraud,” “Sack and Probe Mele Kyari Now,” and “NNPC Now an Osusu Ministry,” among others.
Comrade Musa Adebayo, President of Arewa Youth Congress, read a statement jointly signed by Comrade Usman Saidu, President of the Northern Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative. In the statement, they expressed concern that there had been no significant increase in oil production since the contract was awarded to Tompolo. They questioned the wisdom of re-awarding the contract to an ex-Militant General, given the tension, financial irregularities, disinformation, and abnormalities associated with the contract.
The protesters called for a thorough investigation into the pipeline surveillance contract, as well as the suspension and investigation of several NNPC executives allegedly involved in the contracts and the establishment of a project management office for an unknown company, Inter-Atlas Limited, which reportedly cost the Federal government almost $1 billion in the last year.
They emphasized that the country is currently too tense to allow for any action that could lead to internal turmoil and more controversies. They vowed to continue occupying the premises until their demands are met.
