Early Life and Career
Born on April 4, 1952, in Iyamho, Edo State, Oshiomhole’s early experiences shaped his passion for workers’ rights. He began his career at Arewa Textiles Company, where he was elected union secretary. This role marked the start of his deep involvement in labor movements. In 1982, he became the General Secretary of the National Union of Textile, Garment and Tailoring Workers of Nigeria, leading a union of over 75,000 members. His leadership was characterized by significant strides in improving workers’ welfare and negotiating better working conditions.
Political Career
Transitioning into politics, Oshiomhole was elected as the Governor of Edo State in 2008. His tenure was marked by infrastructural development, educational reforms, and initiatives aimed at poverty alleviation. He launched the “Red Roof Revolution,” renovating numerous schools and enhancing the state’s educational infrastructure. His administration also focused on road construction and healthcare improvements, directly impacting the lives of Edo residents.
In 2018, Oshiomhole became the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
