Wike Announces Ban On Popular Activity In Abuja

Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has issued a prohibition on street trading activities in Abuja.

Wike, who previously served as the governor of Rivers State, emphasized that individuals involved in street trading, such as the sale of items like corn and street hawking, have contributed to the rise of insecurity and criminal incidents in the nation’s capital.

He explained that criminals, taking advantage of street trading scenarios like the sale of corn, exploit these situations to gather information and carry out unlawful actions.

“The practice of street trading is now prohibited. The disposal of waste by those selling corn and similar activities is done without consideration, and this reckless behavior is a contributor to insecurity,” Wike declared.

“Criminals exploit the situation by engaging in purchases and then using the opportunity to observe and relay information to their cohorts. It is crucial that we address the issue of street hawkers.”

Speaking to the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) on Wednesday, Wike issued this directive and urged them to remain dedicated to proper governance.

“Our primary goal is to restore Abuja to its intended state. During my recent inspection of Abuja, I observed that numerous areas were shrouded in darkness. Our immediate task is to reinstate adequate lighting as swiftly as possible,” he stated.

“In your capacity as sanitation overseers, I want you to be prepared for contact at any time of day. Disorderly motor parks should not be scattered across the city. Timely action needs to be taken. If you’re unable to meet the standards I’ve set, speak up now so we can make necessary changes.”

Wike stressed that despite prevailing challenges, these difficulties should not justify disorderliness within the nation’s capital.

Furthermore, he remarked, “The issue of development control has become a critical problem that demands attention. Why have unauthorized structures and makeshift settlements proliferated? We will dismantle any unauthorized structures, regardless of the occupant’s status. The structure will be brought down, regardless of their position.”
