BREAKING: Tribunal Delivers Judgement On Enugu Governor’s Election

Mbah and Edeoga

The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Enugu State has affirmed the victory of Governor Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party in the March 18 governorship election.

The three-member tribunal panel, led by Justice Kudirat Murayo, dismissed the petitions of the Labour Party and its candidate, Chijioke Edeoga, stating that they failed to provide sufficient evidence for their claims.

In their dismissal of the petitioners’ case, the tribunal asserted that possessing a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate is not a requirement to contest a governorship election.

Edeoga had contested Mbah’s election, alleging the submission of a forged NYSC discharge certificate and other irregularities.

However, in their judgment delivered on Thursday, the tribunal rejected the forgery claim related to the NYSC certificate, stating, “NYSC discharge Certificate is not a qualification for governorship.”

The court further raised the question, “Even assuming that the NYSC discharge certificate of the second Respondent, as claimed by the Petitioners, was forged, is the NYSC Certificate a qualification to contest for Governor in Nigeria according to the constitution? The answer is no.”
