President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for the creation of a Civil Service Commission in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

This move is aimed at enhancing career advancement opportunities for civil servants within the FCT Administration.

The announcement was made by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, during a press briefing held in Abuja on Friday.

According to Mr. Wike, the National Assembly passed a bill in 2018 advocating for the establishment of the CSC in the FCT, which received the assent of the then-acting President Yemi Osibanjo.

He expressed that civil servants within the FCTA had become disillusioned due to the fact that Directors in the Administration were unable to reach the pinnacle of their careers, largely due to the absence of a Civil Service Commission (CSC).

Furthermore, he noted that the legislation for establishing this commission had been officially endorsed. However, for various reasons, its implementation was stalled.

He elaborated that apprehension over public opinion and concerns about potential reductions in authority and influence were among the factors influencing this decision.

The minister also admitted that he himself was only recently made aware of the existence of this legislation.

“So, I wrote a Memo to Mr President. I say, you have a renewed hope agenda; civil servants in FCT are suffering; they have lost hope.

“They are not committed to work. Why should I be working because at the end of the day, I can’t get to the apex of my career. As such, we must implement that 2018 law as passed by the National Assembly.

“If there are challenges, of course there is no law that is perfect. You can only know the challenges when you start implementing.

“So, let’s implement, whatever the challenges are, then we can begin to talk of how we can amend it

“I can tell you authoritatively that Mr President has given the approval for the establishment of Civil Service Commission for the FCTA,” he said.

According to Mr. Wike, this initiative will allow civil servants to advance from their roles as directors to the esteemed position of Permanent Secretaries, marking a significant aspect of the renewed hope agenda.

He encouraged civil servants to express their gratitude to Tinubu for this noteworthy development, highlighting that they had waited patiently for several years.

Mr. Wike emphasized that his decision to collaborate with Tinubu was influenced by Tinubu’s capabilities and his boldness to undertake endeavors that others might shy away from.

He underscored that a fundamental issue facing the nation is leadership, and urged people not to shy away from doing what is right.

“What is important is that the action is guided by law, conscience, and guided by the interest of Nigerians and not the interest of me, the FCT minister, or any other person,” he said.
