BREAKING: Details Emerge As FG Plans 50% Subsidy
Minister of Agriculture, Abubakar Kyari, announced that the Federal Government is providing a 50 percent subsidy to wheat farmers for the upcoming dry season farming.
This initiative is aimed at significantly increasing wheat production in the country.
Kyari shared these details with reporters after inspecting various wheat seed productions in Kano on Friday.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to achieving substantial wheat production during the upcoming dry season farming, both for local consumption and foreign exports.
He highlighted President Tinubu’s renewed agenda to ensure food security in Nigeria, starting as early as next month, with a strong focus on wheat farming during the dry season.

The minister, who had visited Kano and Jigawa to oversee seed production, expressed satisfaction with the pivotal role of local production in this endeavor. He commended Jigawa State for dedicating 40,000 hectares of land for wheat farming, contributing to the Federal Government’s goal of 70,000 hectares for the year.
Kyari detailed the government’s efforts to procure sufficient seeds to cover the allocated 70,000 hectares for wheat farming. He emphasized the need to phase out wheat imports before the next year’s irrigation farming, as the importation of wheat significantly impacts Nigeria’s foreign reserves.
The minister underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to achieving food security and self-sufficiency, noting that ending seed imports through enhanced local production is one of the steps toward achieving this goal.
He concluded by stating that with the outlined programs, Nigeria aims to completely halt the importation of wheat seeds within the next 4-5 years, relying solely on local production to bolster food security. During his visit, the minister inspected the National Wheat Council Warehouses at Sharada, AA Albasu Grains Company, and Alyumna Seeds Production Company.
