Laughing Gas To Become Illegal Next Month, Dealers Face 14 Years In Jail (DETAILS)

England – Starting from 8 November, nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas or NOS, will be prohibited as part of a government initiative to curb anti-social behavior.

It will be classified as a controlled Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act (1971).

Repeat users could face up to two years in prison, while the maximum sentence for dealers has been doubled to 14 years. Individuals found with nitrous oxide intending to misuse it for intoxication could also receive an unlimited fine, a visible community punishment, or a caution on their criminal record.

This measure is a response to combat “flagrant” drug use, with nitrous oxide being associated with anti-social behavior, including intimidating gatherings, and its empty canisters often being discarded in public spaces.

Heavy usage of nitrous oxide carries substantial health risks such as anaemia, nerve damage, and paralysis.

Additionally, it has the potential to cause fatal drug-related accidents.

Among 16 to 24-year-olds in England, it is the second most commonly used drug after cannabis, raising concerns about the health problems linked to its usage.

The legislation will not affect legitimate uses of the drug in professional kitchens, dental procedures, and maternity wards for pain relief. Nevertheless, producers and suppliers are urged to exercise responsibility and avoid reckless sales.

The Home Office emphasized that “turning a blind eye” to misuse will be considered an offense. This ban has garnered support from organizations like Neighbourhood Watch and the Night Time Industries Association, who believe it will contribute to safer communities.

However, some argue that criminalizing nitrous oxide might drive people to obtain it from the dark web or experiment with other substances.

The Advisory Council for the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) refrained from recommending a ban on laughing gas after conducting a review in 2021, deeming it disproportionate to the harm associated with the substance and recognizing potential burdens on legitimate uses.
