Nigeria? – List Of Countries To See Worsening Hunger Emerge

Hunger

According to the latest Global Hunger Index (GHI), nine countries, including Nigeria, are projected to experience an exacerbation of hunger levels in the upcoming year.

The GHI serves as a comprehensive tool for assessing and monitoring hunger on a global, regional, and national scale.

Apart from Nigeria, the nations anticipated to face worsening hunger situations in 2023 are Afghanistan, Haiti, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Yemen, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

The GHI report underscores that numerous countries are presently grappling with severe hunger, and this situation is anticipated to further deteriorate in the coming year.

While conflicts and climate change are significant drivers of these crises, the report emphasizes that economic downturns represent even more pervasive contributing factors.

“Many countries are experiencing severe hunger in 2023, with the situation expected to worsen throughout the year. Though circumstances in 2023 are not yet captured by the data in this year’s GHI scores, early warning resources indicate that many areas of the world are in crisis,” stated the index report.

Nigeria holds the 109th position out of the 125 countries for which there is sufficient data to compute the 2023 GHI scores. The country’s GHI score stands at 28.3, indicating a serious level of hunger within its borders.
