AFCON 2023: South Africa Triumphs Over DR Congo In Penalty Shootout To Secure Third Place
Captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as the hero once more as South Africa clinched third place in the Africa Cup of Nations with a tense 6-5 victory on penalties against the Democratic Republic of Congo in Abidjan…..CONTINUE READING
Following a goalless draw after 90 minutes, Williams displayed remarkable prowess in the penalty shootout, denying spot kicks from Chancel Mbemba and Meschack Elia, ultimately securing the bronze medal for Bafana Bafana in the Ivory Coast.
The decisive moment came when Siyanda Xulu successfully converted his penalty for South Africa, while Williams thwarted Elia’s attempt, sealing their triumph.
Williams had previously showcased his penalty-saving abilities, notably saving four kicks in the quarter-final shootout against Cape Verde, propelling South Africa into the semi-finals.
Despite a spirited performance from DR Congo, who created several scoring opportunities throughout the match, they were unable to capitalize on their chances. South Africa’s flawless record in third-place playoffs remained intact, having previously triumphed over Tunisia on penalties 24 years ago.
South Africa made strategic changes to their lineup, with Nkosinathi Sibisi, Thapelo Morena, and Mihlali Mayambela stepping in for suspended Grant Kekana and injured players Mothobi Mvala and Percy Tau.
Meanwhile, DR Congo opted for alterations as well, retaining only two players from their previous match. Despite their efforts, they fell short in the shootout, conceding the third-place spot to South Africa.
Despite being less dominant in possession during the first half, DR Congo posed a constant threat in attack, with Silas Mvumpa coming close to breaking the deadlock early in the game, only to be denied by the vigilant Williams.
