Arguing that traditional rulers play a vital role in society, particularly in addressing issues related to insecurity, Senator Ibrahim emphasized their relevance during an appearance on Channels Television.
The 2024 budget allocated N7.61 billion for the “empowerment of traditional rulers,” sparking debate on the necessity of such funding.
In response, Senator Ibrahim challenged the notion that traditional rulers are separate from the government, highlighting their historical significance within Nigeria’s federal system.
He questioned, “Are traditional rulers not part of our government? Are they not part of Nigeria? Are they not responsible for certain issues in security?”
Addressing concerns about overlapping responsibilities between the federal and state governments, Senator Ibrahim emphasized the interconnectedness of the Nigerian political landscape. He pointed out that states rely on support from the federal government and, therefore, cannot be considered completely sovereign entities.
He stated, “States are not sovereign within the federal sovereignty, it is one umbrella of sovereignty that encompasses everyone.”
Senator Ibrahim’s defense underscores the ongoing debate surrounding the role and funding of traditional rulers in Nigeria’s governance structure.
