Unilorin NASU, SSANU To Fully Observe 7-Day Warning Strike, Say Union Leaders

In separate conversations in Ilorin on Sunday, Comrades Ibrahim Zubar and Falowo Olushola Naheem, Chairmen of NASU and SSANU respectively, reiterated their union’s resolve to participate in the strike action.

Comrade Falowo outlined that the warning strike aims to compel the Federal government to address various outstanding demands of the unions, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/NASU/SSANU agreement, the reconstitution of governing councils, payment of four months withheld salaries, release of earned allowances, and enhanced funding for public universities.

He emphasized that the decision to embark on the 7-day warning strike stemmed primarily from the non-payment of four months’ salaries, contrasting it with the partial payment received by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for the same period.

Echoing similar sentiments, Comrade Ibrahim affirmed total compliance from NASU members, emphasizing that all union members will abstain from duty throughout the duration of the strike.

He asserted that there should be no expectation of any union member reporting for duty during the stipulated period.

The national bodies of NASU and SSANU declared the 7-day warning strike following the expiration of an ultimatum issued to the federal government regarding the unresolved issues.

As the strike action unfolds, concerns over the disruption of academic activities loom large, underscoring the urgency for dialogue and resolution of the underlying grievances.
