During a press briefing held at Centenary City, Abakaliki, Dr. Moses Ekuma, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, emphasized the severity of tuberculosis and called for increased commitment from all stakeholders in the fight against the disease. He stressed the importance of adhering to World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations and implementing innovative strategies, while also highlighting the need for civil society organizations to play a proactive role in reducing TB prevalence.

Dr. Ekuma outlined the state government’s achievements in TB control, including raising awareness about the causes and treatment of the disease in every community, and ensuring that all identified TB, Buruli ulcer, and leprosy patients receive prompt treatment and are cured. He urged individuals to seek early diagnosis and treatment, citing the installation of Gene-Xpert machines and TB Microscopic Centers across the state to facilitate rapid diagnosis in various hospitals.

Despite progress, Dr. Ekuma acknowledged challenges such as inadequate funding for TB programs. He commended implementing partners like WHO, CARITAS Nigeria, and others for their support in addressing these challenges.

The press briefing also featured contributions from Chief Nwite Samuel, the Programme Manager of the National Tuberculosis, Leprosy, and Buruli Ulcer Control Programme, who provided insights into the state’s tuberculosis services. Dr. Hyacinth Ebenyi, the Director of Public Health, expressed gratitude to CARITAS and other partners for their support and pledged to continue sensitization efforts in the state.

Representatives from WHO, CARITAS Group, Instrat Global Health Solutions, and other stakeholders attended the briefing, underscoring the collaborative effort to combat tuberculosis in Ebonyi State.

This initiative highlights the state government’s commitment to tackling tuberculosis and underscores the importance of early diagnosis and treatment in curbing the spread of the disease.
