In a statement released through his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, on Wednesday, Secondus commended Fubara for his dedication to democratic values. He stated, “Governor Fubara has exemplified true leadership by standing firm for democracy. His refusal to succumb to intimidation is a testament to his commitment to his people and their future.”

Secondus also took the opportunity to urge President Bola Tinubu to collaborate closely with Governor Fubara to safeguard the critical national assets situated in Rivers State. He emphasized the importance of cooperation between the federal government and Rivers, given its strategic economic significance.

He reminded the federal government of Rivers State’s critical role in hosting essential national resources and advised President Tinubu to work alongside Governor Fubara to ensure their protection.

Secondus Sounds Alarm on Nigeria’s Democracy

In a related development, Secondus has expressed serious concerns regarding the future of Nigeria’s democracy. He warned that the rigging tactics employed by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) pose a threat to the stability of the nation’s political system.

In a statement issued by his media adviser, Ike Abonyi, in Abuja on Tuesday, Secondus raised fears that the 2027 elections might be jeopardized due to what he describes as the APC’s systematic sabotage of democratic processes. His comments followed the recent Edo State gubernatorial election, which he claims was marred by widespread irregularities to ensure the APC’s victory.

Secondus alleged that the ruling party has “murdered and buried” democratic principles in Nigeria, citing the flagrant disregard for electoral laws and the disenfranchisement of voters as clear evidence of electoral fraud. He pointed to similar malpractice in other recent elections in Imo and Kogi states and criticized the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under Prof. Mahmood Yakubu for its inaction.

He also condemned the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Ganduje, for suggesting that the “template” used in the Edo election would be replicated in upcoming elections in Ondo and Anambra states, warning that the APC’s actions could pave the way for a one-party state.

According to Secondus, these developments indicate the ruling party’s intention to silence dissenting voices and undermine the checks and balances essential for a healthy democracy. He asserted, “The beauty of democracy lies in the opposing voices that help to check the ruling party, but the APC is set to stifle Nigeria with their misrule and will not tolerate differing views.”

Secondus warned, “Nigeria’s democracy is sitting on a keg of gunpowder because of rigging. If the Edo election stands, it will be difficult to conduct future elections in Nigeria.” He emphasized that the manipulation seen in Edo—characterized by the harassment of opposition leaders and the compromise of security agencies and electoral officials—sets a dangerous precedent for future electoral processes.

“The world is watching as we bring shame to this beautiful form of government that other nations use to stabilize and develop their countries,” he concluded.
