Fubara: Rivers LG Election Must Proceed, IG Can’t Stop Me
Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara has asserted that the local government election in the state must take place as scheduled. He emphasized that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun cannot prevent him from accessing the premises of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC).
Speaking at an event in Port Harcourt, Fubara declared that the IGP would have to resort to violence to stop him from entering the RSIEC facilities.
“When it comes to matters concerning Rivers State, it becomes different. You have no shame calling yourself the Inspector General of Police. Enough is enough; I will be here. If I hear any complaints, I will return because this is my domain,” he stated.
He added, “You do not have the authority to bar me from entry. If you attempt to do so, your legacy as a cruel IGP will include the act of shooting Fubara. I have shown you enough respect, and to all Rivers indigenes, elections must proceed; whatever happens will happen.”
The Rivers State Police Command had previously announced its refusal to allow the local government election, scheduled for Saturday, to take place. In a statement signed by its spokesperson, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, titled ‘Proposed October 5th, 2024 Local Government Chairman Election,’ the Command confirmed receipt of a restraining order that prevents the police from providing security during the elections.
The statement also acknowledged the Federal High Court ruling from September 30, 2024, which prohibits the Police Force from participating in the local government election. Furthermore, it indicated that the Force Legal Department advised compliance with the court’s ruling, which takes precedence.
