Russia Accuses U.S. And U.K. Of Plot To Sabotage Ties With Nigeria Amid Protest Scandal

The Russian government has accused the United States and the United Kingdom of attempting to sabotage its relationship with Nigeria by linking it to the August 1 hunger protests in the country. This claim was made in a letter from the Russian government, addressed to Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and delivered by Yury Paramonov, the Press Secretary of the Russian Embassy in Nigeria, on Friday in Abuja.

During the protests, some demonstrators were seen waving Russian flags and chanting slogans, with others holding placards bearing various messages. Russia has also been accused of being involved in political unrest in several West African countries, including Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, raising concerns about external interference in the region.

However, Russia, a global power, alleged that the U.S., U.K., and Ukraine were trying to link it to the protests in a bid to damage its cordial relationship with Nigeria. The Russian government urged Nigeria to ignore such accusations.

Paramonov also conveyed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on the occasion of Nigeria’s National Day. He condemned the allegations made by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former British Council Director in Nigeria David Roberts, and Ukraine’s Ambassador to Nigeria Ivan Kholostenko, calling their claims “shameless and baseless.”

“The Embassy categorically rejects such accusations and reiterates that the Russian Federation had no involvement in the protests and has no connection to any potential future demonstrations or unrest,” Paramonov said.

He further emphasized that Russia has always respected Nigeria’s sovereignty and adheres to the principle of non-interference in the internal affairs of independent states. The Embassy also extended its best wishes to Nigeria, expressing hopes for continued cooperation and stronger ties between the two nations.
