In 2025, the World Bank will decide on three major loan initiatives for Nigeria, amounting to a total of $1.65 billion, aimed at addressing critical developmental issues in the country. education, and nutrition improvement.
Details from the World Bank’s website reveal that the loans are designed to support Nigeria’s recovery in vulnerable sectors, which require urgent attention.
The first initiative, “Solutions for the Internally Displaced and Host Communities Project,” will receive $300 million, with approval set for April 8, 2025. The project is still in its concept review stage and aims to address the social and economic challenges faced by IDPs and the communities that host them.
The second project, “HOPE for Quality Basic Education for All,” will receive $553.8 million, with approval anticipated for March 20, 2025. This initiative is also under concept review.
The third project, “Accelerating Nutrition Results in Nigeria 2.0,” is the largest of the three, with $800 million allocated. A decision meeting for this initiative is scheduled for February 20, 2025.
This $1.65 billion financing package demonstrates the World Bank’s ongoing commitment to supporting Nigeria’s reforms and efforts to recover economically and socially.
The timeline for these loans will depend on Nigeria’s ability to meet the necessary requirements and ensure accountability during implementation.
Since President Bola Tinubu’s administration, Nigeria has secured loans totaling $6.95 billion from the World Bank in the past 18 months. The most recent loan, approved on December 13, 2024, is a $500 million financing package aimed at improving rural access and agricultural marketing in Nigeria.
This is the 10th loan approved under the Tinubu administration. Previous projects include a $750 million loan for the power sector and a $500 million loan to support women’s empowerment.
The World Bank has also approved loans aimed at improving educational opportunities for adolescent girls and access to renewable energy. These initiatives reflect the bank’s focus on sectors critical to Nigeria’s development.
However, Nigeria’s rising debt burden is a concern. The country’s external debt to the World Bank now totals $16.32 billion, a significant portion of its overall foreign debt. Despite this, the World Bank continues to provide substantial loans, underscoring its role in supporting Nigeria’s ongoing reforms.
