The Boeing 737-800, operated by Jeju Air, was en route from Bangkok, Thailand, carrying 181 passengers and crew. The aircraft crash-landed at around 9:00 AM local time on Sunday, December 29, and erupted into flames immediately after touching down.
Despite the heroic efforts of rescue teams, only two survivors – both crew members – were pulled from the wreckage.
A Devastating Scene
Images circulating on social media show thick black smoke billowing from the wreckage, with firefighters desperately battling the flames as the tail section of the plane remained engulfed in fire. The catastrophic accident prompted the cancellation of all flights at Muan International Airport, stranding thousands of travelers.
A Nation in Mourning
South Korea’s Acting President, Choi Sang-mok, has declared the site a special disaster zone, unlocking government funds for relief efforts. In his address, he expressed his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, acknowledging the gravity of the tragedy. “We are facing a heartbreaking loss of life today,” he said, vowing to ensure swift medical treatment for the injured.
International Reactions
Boeing and Jeju Air have both offered their deepest sympathies to the victims, with the airline pledging a thorough investigation into the accident.
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, also expressed his sorrow, noting that two Thai nationals were on board the flight, and has directed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to assist their families.
Jeju Air’s First Fatal Incident
This crash marks Jeju Air’s first fatal accident since its inception in 2005, and the airline has promised to do everything in its power to respond to the tragedy.
The aviation community and families alike are grappling with the loss, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue. Meanwhile, authorities have confirmed that the majority of the passengers were South Korean citizens.
