in Minna to mark the 60th birthday of literary legend BM Dzukogi, Bago argued that teaching English solely as a subject, rather than the primary medium of instruction, could better serve students in northern Nigeria.

In his address, Governor Bago emphasized that switching to Hausa as the language of instruction could not only enhance students’ comprehension but also increase enrollment rates and tackle the region’s high number of out-of-school children.

“Learning in a familiar language will drastically improve understanding and academic performance,” said Governor Bago. “By making Hausa the medium of instruction, we can make education more accessible, reduce dropout rates, and close the learning gap in northern Nigeria.”

Highlighting the challenges many children face when taught in English – a language they may not be familiar with – Bago stressed that using Hausa would allow for a deeper engagement with educational content, especially in areas where educational barriers are high.

In addition to pushing for the adoption of local languages, Bago urged parents to take a more active role in their children’s education. He also called for increased investment in books and resources to nurture a culture of reading and critical thinking among youth.

“Fostering a strong reading culture is key to addressing the societal challenges we face and securing a brighter future for our children,” Bago concluded.
