approximately 200 charges he claims are politically motivated. Earlier this month, he received a 14-year prison sentence while his wife was sentenced to seven years in a related case.

“We filed the appeals today, and they will go through standard clerical processes before being scheduled for a hearing,” Khan’s lawyer, Khalid Chaudhry, informed AFP outside the Islamabad High Court.

Since his arrest, Khan has been convicted four times, having two convictions overturned and the sentences in the remaining two cases suspended.

A special corruption court declared both Khan and Bibi guilty of “corruption and corrupt practices” related to a welfare foundation they founded together, known as the Al-Qadir Trust.

The court proceedings faced delays, and Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party alleged that these legal challenges were designed to pressure him into compromising with the government to step back from the political arena.

Khan indicated that he had been “indirectly approached” about the possibility of house arrest at his expansive residence on the outskirts of Islamabad.

Bibi, a faith healer, is incarcerated alongside her husband in a detention facility located in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near the capital.

Khan’s continued popularity poses a challenge to the fragile coalition government that prevented the PTI from regaining power in last year’s elections.

Despite being behind bars, Khan remains vocal, issuing statements via his legal team criticizing the government while committing to fight his legal battles in court.

Violent protests have gripped Islamabad in recent months, and the PTI has announced plans for additional rallies next month to commemorate one year since the elections marred by accusations of rigging.

Khan recently aborted negotiations with the government aimed at reducing political tensions.

Ousted through a no-confidence vote in 2022, the former cricket idol has spearheaded a unique campaign wherein he openly confronts Pakistan’s powerful military leaders.

Analysts contend that the military’s leaders act as Pakistan’s kingmakers, a claim the generals deny.

A UN panel of experts concluded last year that Khan’s detention lacked any legal basis and appeared designed to disqualify him from future political candidacy.

Khan was barred from participating in the elections held last February, and his PTI party faced severe restrictions during a widespread crackdown.

While the PTI secured more seats than any other party, a coalition favorable to the military ultimately excluded them from power.
