Garba Shehu, the former Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to late President Muhammadu Buhari, has disclosed the real reason his former principal was disappointed with the #EndSARS movement despite its legitimate origins.

According to iReporter Online, Shehu stated during an interview on Arise Television’s Morning Show that Buhari would have welcomed the protest if it had remained peaceful and constructive. He explained that the President was initially supportive of the call to end police brutality, particularly regarding the controversial Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

“There’s no doubt Buhari recognized the grievances behind #EndSARS,” Shehu said. “He responded swiftly with concessions, including dismantling the SARS unit and opening dialogue channels.”

However, according to iReporter Online, the turning point came when the peaceful demonstrations were overtaken by violent elements. Shehu described how arson, attacks on law enforcement, destruction of government property, and loss of innocent lives forced the administration to intervene decisively.

“No leader would stand aside while chaos reigns,” he emphasized. “Assets were being burnt, lives were being lost. Buhari could not be happy with what the protest became.”
