Tragedy in Abuja: Toddler Drowns in Open Soakaway as Police Arrest Negligent Resident

A tragic incident occurred in Durumi 2, Abuja, where a three-year-old boy lost his life after falling into an uncovered soakaway pit. According to iReporter Online, officers from the Federal Capital Territory Police Command arrested a resident of the area, identified as Philip Jallo, in connection with the child’s death.

The unfortunate event happened on Tuesday night when the child, while playing in the compound, accidentally slipped into the exposed septic tank filled with human waste. Although he was pulled out, efforts to save him were futile as doctors confirmed him dead upon arrival at the hospital.

The police revealed, according to iReporter Online, that preliminary investigations showed the soakaway pit had long been a known hazard in the neighborhood. Several warnings had allegedly been issued to the suspect by concerned residents urging him to cover the pit, but no action was taken.

In a statement released on Friday, the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Ajao Adewale, expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family and condemned the environmental negligence that led to the child’s death. Adewale, according to iReporter Online, urged all residents of Abuja to prioritize environmental safety and called on parents and guardians to vigilantly monitor their children to avoid such devastating losses.

The police have confirmed that the suspect will remain in custody as investigations continue to determine his level of culpability in the incident.
