“Presidency Is Not Moi Moi” – Igbokwe Dismisses Obi’s One-Term Promise as Desperate Gimmick

Prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC) have criticized former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for his recent declaration that he would serve only a single term if elected president in 2027. The reactions come amid heightened political activity and growing discourse surrounding the next presidential race.

In a statement shared on social media, APC chieftain Joe Igbokwe argued that Obi’s one-term pledge reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of what national leadership entails. Describing the move as desperate, Igbokwe asserted that those who make such promises lack a firm grasp of Nigeria’s political complexity and the weight of presidential responsibilities.

“Desperation is everywhere,” Igbokwe wrote. “Those who do not know Nigeria well, and those who do not understand what leadership requires, are the ones desperately asking for a single term in office. Becoming President of Nigeria is not moi moi.”

Peter Obi has maintained that a four-year presidency would be sufficient for meaningful transformation, a position that has sparked both praise and skepticism across political circles. However, critics like Igbokwe view it as politically naïve, arguing that governance at the federal level demands more than symbolic gestures.

Adding to the discourse, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, David Umahi, has also urged caution within the Southeast region, stating that aspirations for an Igbo presidency will remain unattainable if the region fails to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027. According to Umahi, the Southeast must eschew divisive politics and instead focus on building strong alliances with other geopolitical zones.

He cautioned that agitation for a presidency in 2027 is premature and politically unrealistic. “We must not be deceived again,” Umahi said, adding that the Southeast must deliver overwhelming electoral support for Tinubu as a strategic move toward achieving a future presidency for the region.

“President Tinubu has demonstrated love and fairness to the Southeast,” he stated. “If we are serious about leading this country one day, then we must avoid the politics of hate, misinformation, and sentiment. Our time will come, but not in 2027.”

As the political tempo increases ahead of the next general election cycle, Obi’s single-term stance continues to polarize opinion, with analysts watching closely to see how it shapes alliances and voter sentiment across the country.
