Emir Sanusi Recounts Chilling Moment Murtala Was Assassinated While He Was At King’s College

The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has shared a deeply personal account of where he was during the tragic assassination of Nigeria’s former Head of State, Murtala Mohammed.

According to iReporter Online, Sanusi revealed during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today that he was a student at Kings College in Lagos when the coup led by Lt. Col. Bukar Suka Dimka claimed Murtala’s life on February 13, 1976.

Sanusi, reflecting on Murtala’s legacy 49 years after his death, paid an emotional tribute, describing the late leader as “kind-hearted, humorous, and strong-willed.”

He added that Murtala was more than a national figure to him — he was family. “Murtala Mohammed was my uncle. My father served in the foreign service, and I was raised by our great uncle, Alhaji Inuwa Wada, who was also Murtala’s uncle,” he said.

According to iReporter Online, Sanusi detailed how Murtala served as his official guardian during his Kings College years. “I came to Lagos in 1973, and every weekend, midterm break, and parts of the holidays, I would stay in his house with his children.

We were very close. I was in Kings College, and he was my guardian when he was assassinated.”

The Emir recalled the contrast between Murtala’s public persona and his private nature, stating, “He had this image of being very stern and strong, but he was actually gentle and full of humour.”
