In a statement signed by his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, the Alaafin described the Ooni’s conferment as an “affront” and a direct challenge to his authority.

The statement further criticizes the Ooni’s action as “ultra vires” and an insult to Yorubaland’s traditional hierarchy, citing a Supreme Court ruling that affirms only the Alaafin has such authority.
