Dangote Refinery Denies Mass Sack, Says Only Few Workers Affected
According to Ireporter Online, the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has denied claims of a mass dismissal, clarifying that only a few employees were affected by its recent restructuring. This followed widespread reports alleging that the refinery had sacked nearly all Nigerian workers less than 24 hours after the majority joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).
In a statement released via its official account on Friday, the company explained that the decision was not arbitrary but necessary to address repeated acts of sabotage that had raised serious safety concerns and disrupted operational efficiency.
Dangote Refinery emphasised that more than 3,000 Nigerians are still actively employed at the facility despite the shake-up, adding that the company continues to recruit through graduate trainee schemes and experienced hire processes.
The refinery maintained that it remains committed to upholding international labour standards, including workers’ rights to freely decide on union membership. It stressed that the restructuring was undertaken to protect the refinery’s long-term stability as a strategic national asset vital to Nigeria and Africa’s energy independence.
The statement further reiterated the company’s dedication to transparency, accountability, and the creation of sustainable jobs, while assuring stakeholders that the refinery’s operations remain secure and intact.
