Petrol Prices Stubbornly High At ₦865 Despite Dangote’s Free Delivery Promise

According to Ireporter Online, petrol continues to retail at an average of ₦865 per litre across several filling stations despite the Dangote Refinery’s recent price slash and free delivery initiative. Nearly three weeks ago, the refinery announced a reduction of its ex-depot price to ₦820 per litre, with a promise of nationwide distribution through compressed natural gas-powered trucks to eliminate logistics costs. The plan was expected to lower pump prices to ₦841 in Lagos and ₦851 in other states, but the anticipated relief has yet to reach motorists.

Investigations revealed that while a few MRS outlets in Lagos adjusted to ₦841, most filling stations still sell between ₦865 and ₦870. At Alapere, one MRS station attracted long queues as motorists rushed to benefit from the reduced rate, but other outlets nearby maintained higher prices. In Ogun State, some stations even sold above ₦870.

Sources confirmed that Dangote trucks had commenced nationwide fuel delivery, yet many marketers have refused to reduce their prices. A refinery official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, criticised the practice, stressing that marketers continue to sell at old rates despite receiving supplies at ₦820 with free logistics. However, he admitted that Dangote cannot legally enforce pump prices since pricing is deregulated and falls under the purview of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.

Meanwhile, the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) expressed concerns over the refinery’s pricing strategy, arguing that frequent cuts destabilise the market and negatively impact other importers and distributors. Executive Secretary Olufemi Adewole warned that such reductions, though appearing patriotic, create distortions and financial strain across the sector.

On its part, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has maintained its pump price at ₦865 in Lagos, with no immediate plans for adjustment. Independent marketers who had earlier pledged to lower prices following Dangote’s supply are yet to make any changes.
