Mikel Obi Blasts Arsenal After Chelsea Triumph, Challenges Arteta’s Tactical Approach
Former Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel has criticised Arsenal’s overall performance this season, insisting that their 2-1 victory over Chelsea F.C. did little to convince him of their quality.
According to Ireporter Online, Arsenal secured all three points in Sunday’s Premier League derby, but the former Chelsea midfielder expressed disappointment with the Gunners’ display. Mikel accused manager Mikel Arteta of relying excessively on set pieces while failing to maximise the attacking talent within the squad.
Speaking on his Obi One Podcast, Mikel reflected on the intensity and excitement that once defined London derbies during his playing days. He remarked that such fixtures were traditionally marked by passion, creativity and high-level entertainment, qualities he believes were missing from the recent encounter.
The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner suggested that the match lacked spark and was difficult to watch, noting that derby clashes should showcase flair and attacking ambition. While acknowledging Arsenal’s victory, he maintained that their performance fell short in terms of creativity and excitement.
Mikel further questioned the team’s attacking blueprint, arguing that despite significant investment in creative players, Arsenal continue to depend heavily on dead-ball situations to secure results. He pointed to the club’s impressive tally of goals from corner kicks this season but warned that an overreliance on set pieces could prove costly in the long run.
In his assessment, Arsenal’s inability to consistently create and score from open play raises concerns about their chances of sustaining success, regardless of their recent win.
